When shingles make sense
Asphalt shingles are the right call when budget matters, you want to match the neighborhood, or you want the job done fast (most shingle roofs install in 1–2 days). They come in dozens of colors and, in a Class 4 impact-resistant version, hold up well to our hail and wind. The trade-off is a shorter life — you'll likely replace a shingle roof once or twice over the time one metal roof lasts.
When metal makes sense
Metal is the move if you plan to stay in the home long-term, want lower cooling bills, or are simply tired of worrying about storms. It can be the last roof you buy. The downsides are honest ones: roughly double the upfront cost, it needs an installer experienced with metal, and panels can show "oil-canning" (slight waviness) or dent under heavy impact.
Resale & insurance
Either way, a new roof is one of the strongest things you can show a buyer. Metal and impact-resistant roofs add appeal and can earn an insurance premium discount of about 15–28% for impact-rated systems — worth asking your agent about before you decide. Frequently asked questions
How much more does a metal roof cost than shingles?
Generally about double per square foot — roughly $8–$14 installed for standing-seam metal versus $4.50–$7 for architectural shingles.
Are metal roofs noisy in the rain?
No. Installed over solid decking and underlayment, a metal roof is about as quiet as shingles.
Which lasts longer?
Metal, by a wide margin — 40–70 years versus 25–30 for architectural shingles in the Texas climate.
